Gangbowl
Back

Mission
Create an intensely fun game where colleagues and friends enjoy competing—and occasionally hating—each other regularly.
Motivation
Personal curiosity to learn while having fun, plus the enthusiasm of all players who joined the adventure.
What is it?
Gangbowl is a fun, intense game that tests friendships. It's not about team building—it's closer to team destruction. Yet for some reason, people keep coming back. Maybe it builds team spirit after all. 😅

I handled the development integration, design, and most of game assets myself. I received invaluable support from a former colleague and current developer friend for the core game code.
My goal was to create a game that's easy to play but hard to master.
Beyond the gameplay, Gangbowl is about forming your gang and connecting with people you enjoy playing with—under the same banner, or the same bowl, as I like to say.

The challenge was to deliver enough features quickly without disrupting the gameplay experience.
While the game is punchy and intense, executing moves against opponents can be technically demanding. That's why taunting became part of the experience so I added a quick-reaction feature for this purpose.
The button sits on the opposite side of the virtual joystick for movement, ensuring taunting never interrupts your most critical gameplay actions.

This side project has been a good occasion for me to work on my “illustration skills”. I always thought I was bad. And I was. But I made some progress.
Balls

I started with classic ball designs—football was naturally the first choice.
I couldn't resist adding popular "balls" from different universes: the Droid Ball from Star Wars, the Pixar yellow ball from Toy Story, and the Harry Potter Quaffle, among others.
I then explored visually appealing shapes that look dynamic while rolling—a bowling ball, a rescue puck, and even Earth itself.
Currently, balls are assigned randomly when joining a match, so different players in the same game may see different balls. When players notice this, it sparks conversation. Everyone wants a specific ball, and discussions begin.

A friend of mine have made these beautiful avatars based on our real faces. Me on the left, and the rest are the devs who helped on the game code.

I have used these model and this style to create the “base” avatar with some different emotions. The black helmet is when you are not yet on a side.
